Fracture Critical Bridge Inspection and NDE
BDI partnered with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to evaluate critical structural components of the US 50A bridges over Blue Mesa Reservoir near Gunnison, Colorado. Built in 1963, these multi-span bridges feature fracture-critical T1 steel girders and suspended spans supported by pin-and-hanger assemblies.
After routine inspections identified cracking in weld splice locations on the main girders, CDOT engaged BDI to perform a detailed nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and help guide repair and retrofit decisions. BDI used Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) to locate surface and near-surface cracks and Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) to evaluate internal defects in both the girders and pin-and-hanger components.
BDI’s engineers and technicians conducted all field testing, data collection, and analysis, delivering detailed assessments of weld and steel conditions throughout the structures. Testing confirmed cracking in select girder locations while identifying no cracks or internal flaws in the pin-and-hanger system.
The results provided CDOT with the information needed to develop targeted repair and strengthening strategies, helping extend the service life and reliability of these critical transportation assets.
