Nondestructive Evaluation of Bridges using SounDAR

BDI performed a nondestructive evaluation of a bridge in the northwestern region. The bridge deck inspection utilized BDI’s deck acoustic response system (SounDAR) which emulates chain drag from a lane-width platform without the need for static closure along with high speed GPR and infrared thermography (IR). BDI also performed coring and concrete powder extraction to determine the compressive strength, petrographic properties, and chloride concentration as a function of depth of the concrete to assist in the life cycle modeling and remaining life estimation of the bridge deck.

Finally, BDI assisted in a study to determine the best feasible NDE methodologies for the inspection of the post-tensioned duct system of the bridge and will utilize tools such as ground penetrating radar (GPR), radiographic testing (RT), ultrasonic tomography (MIRA), magnetic flux leakage (MFL), and NIRAS type testing.
