Bridge Deck Evaluation

2_ConcreteThickness_1

Bridge deck preservation is a critical part of any asset management program but it comes with challenges like traffic disruption, complex data collection, and evolving reporting requirements. BDI addresses these with a comprehensive suite of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) techniques that provide vital information to bridge owners such as location and extents of defects and underlying deterioration mechanisms, while minimizing impact to the traveling public. Whether supporting planned maintenance, emergency response, or compliance with DOT mandates, BDI delivers timely, actionable insights. With over 100 million square feet inspected for 24 state DOTs, we bring proven expertise, scalable solutions, and trusted project management to every bridge deck evaluation.

What Can We Do?

BDI’s bridge deck evaluation program is designed to extract critical insights that inform maintenance, preservation, and rehabilitation strategies. We tailor our evaluation services to meet each owner's unique priorities, offering both high-speed surveys and detailed assessments. Our team provides expert guidance to define the appropriate NDE scope, always selecting the best tool for the job.

Deterioration Mechanism

BDI can determine concrete dimensions, including thickness, steel reinforcement layout and depth, joint location, and other dimensional data using a combination of GPR and HRI.

BDI will work with owners to determine the location and extent of delamination, previous repairs, voids, spalls, and other defects in-line with relevant industry standards (AASHTO MBEI, NBI/SNBI, ACI), and crack mapping and width measurements using GPR, HRI, SounDAR, IR, MIRA, UPV, and SE-IR.

BDI can determine precursors to deterioration and potential for corrosion of reinforcement using GPR, HCP, and ER.

BDI can determine likely deterioration mechanisms in order to develop targeted remedial actions by using Visual Inspection, RCT, and Concrete Sampling and Testing.

By employing the majority of NDE technologies via UAVs and vehicle-mounted platforms, BDI achieves repeatable and reliable results while minimizing data collection time and impact traffic.

What We Deliver

Our post-processing workflows transform complex datasets into actionable insights, technical reports, CAD-based feature maps, deterioration statistics, and tailored repair recommendations, all aligned with local municipality or DOT mandates.

BDI strives to find the best means and methods for communicating our work, results, and insights to bridge owners, we develop reports containing content and materials such as:
